No doubt, a freelancer's number one asset is a healthy body and mind. If you want to attract contracts, stay competitive, keep billing and succeed in business, you need the mental headspace and physical energy to fuel your endeavours.

Most of us started life as an independent professional with a dream: Freelancing would enable us to make more money, have more time, be more flexible and design our ideal lifestyle. Of course this dream has come true for some, however, the harsh realities are often different: high levels of uncertainty, pressing deadlines, tiring commutes, long working hours and permanently high stress levels are just a few common aspects of a contracting life. And if that's not enough, in these times of economic crisis we go to even greater lengths to ensure we maintain the level of prosperity we have become accustomed to. Many freelancers push themselves a bit harder, because it's just another thing to get through and once on the other side, things will be much better.

Well, if this is your current strategy then think again. I have seen it many times, this high-pressured lifestyle can come at a cost which endangers the very sustainability of your business, your profits and longerm success. Many freelancers are prone to excess weight and ill health due to their manic lifestyles!

What is the answer? There is not a single cure for it and this is where most people go wrong.

Following a healthy weight loss diet might sound interesting, but is most of the time unrealistic if your main focus is not on counting calories but earning the pennies whilst entertaining clients and coping with dealines.

Having a personalised food plan and all your meals sent home to you ready made, does not stop you from snacking in between when you are stressed or low on energy.

Whilst ongoing weight management support is vital, time-consuming group meetings can be inefficient and stressful for busy people.

Signing up to the gym does not make you go there when you are knackered after a long commute, and simply knowing that you should predominantly consume healthy food does not make you eat it.

Yet all is not lost. The way out of this weight management overwhelm is simple: you need to find a solution that suits your unique lifestyle. That is time-efficient, flexibile, doable and fun for YOU!

Here are the key components to a healthier and slimmer body:

Set yourself a precise weight management goal that is ambitious, realistic and timed.

Find tools that explicitly suit your lifestyle and your personal circumstances (there is not one-size-fits-all, no matter what the weight loss and wellness industry is trying to sell you)

Develop an action plan that is doable, slow, healthy and sustainable. This should include

gradually introducing productive eating habits

moving your body more

dealing with stress

overcoming blockages to success (e.g. emotional eating, limiting beliefs)

To keep you on track, have someone to hold you accountable. This could be a good friend or your personal cheerleader and mentor, a dedicated weight management coach to ensure your success.
